They say that Christopher Columbus was looking for Kerala, the land of spices, when he accidentally stumbled upon the Americas. Today, the narrow fertile strip of land that runs along the southwest tip of India still lures visitors from all over the world. And they come in search of its other attractions – romantic backwaters, wildlife sanctuaries, sandy beaches, aromatic spice gardens, lush tea and coffee estates, charming cities..

In Kerala, nature drapes herself in gowns of vibrant hues that reflect the different moods and shades of the state. The first glimpse of this ever changing tapestry is from the sky as the aircraft soars over palm tree groves and a turquoise sea before touching down at Thiruvanathapuram airport. Those in search of relaxation and nirvana should drive straight to Kovalam.

Said to be one of the world’s 10 best beaches, it is easy to understand Kovalam’s popularity; for apart from being wrapped in peace, its silken sands and tempting warm waters beg you to relax.

Kerala beguiled with her charms once more in Quilon, the southern gateway to the backwaters, and the starting point of a romantic cruise, in a houseboat ingeniously grafted onto a traditional rice boat known as kettuvallom. Before the coming of road and rail transport, the backwaters were the main arteries of the region. It was a time when merchant vessels laden with ivory, gold and silver, silk, rubber and spices sailed for the port city of Kochi from where they were shipped to the rest of the known world. Today this vibrant waterway showcases the laidback Keralan way of life…. quaint white washed little churches, children angling, fisherman repairing their nets…The pace of the nature trail though Kerala changes dramatically as one drives up to Periyar Tiger Reserve, draped across the folds of the Western Ghats. A motorboat, ferries visitors to the Lake Palace, a former royal hunting lodge that teeters on the edge of the forest with the lake on three sides. After a day and a night of wildlife sightings, head to Kochi, a five and a half hour drive away, careening down hairpin bends, past green-blue mountains, manicured tea estates and spice gardens. Explore Kochi, wreathed with the spicy aromas of a Malabar port. But there is still so much more.. Kozhikode or Calicut in the north where the Portuguese navigator Vasco Da Gama first landed in India in 1498, the rainforest of Waynad, the tea estates of Munnar, a stay at some of Ayurvedic spas that provide the healing touch…Yes, you have reason to keep returning to God’s Own Country..
